Tax incentives and export/import advantages are among the benefits of locating in the I-69 International Trade Corridor along Michigan’s Blue Water Gateway. The Corridor, which encompasses Shiawassee, Genesee, Lapeer and St. Clair counties, serves as a strategic gateway between the Midwest United States and the Canadian border.
The Corridor is a Michigan-based partnership focused on job growth and investment. The partnership includes agencies, authorities, municipalities, and businesses along I-69 from the Blue Water Bridge in Port Huron west across the four counties.
According to Janice Karcher, Vice President of Economic Development for the Flint & Genesee Chamber of Commerce businesses can benefit from the region’s properties, workforce, supply chain and many modes of transportation and incentives.
The Corridor benefits from having Flint’s Bishop International Airport at its core; access to major freeways – including I-69, I-75, US-23 and I-94; the Blue Water Bridge, which connects Port Huron to Sarnia, Ontario, Canada; as well as multiple rail providers including CSX and Canadian National.
A major initiative of the Corridor is the I-69 International Trade Corridor Next Michigan Development Corporation (NMDC), which includes 35 municipalities in the four-county region. This initiative allows regions to use tax-free zones and other incentives to grow multi-modal businesses. The I-69 NMDC is the largest in Michigan.
The Regional Chamber is one of four county-wide economic development organizations supporting the Corridor. Shiawassee Economic Development Partnership, Lapeer Development Corporation and the Economic Development Alliance of St. Clair County support economic development activity in their respective counties.
