FACES of Flint & Genesee Business: Jillayne Maxwell, Max Well Therapy, LLC

In 1998, Jillayne Maxwell found herself out of a job due to structural changes in the long-term care facility where she worked. This was the first time she had been out of work since she graduated college. But it gave her the chance to take a leap.

“I had the opportunity to open a physical therapy office in the new Genesee Valley Tennis and Fitness Center,” says Maxwell. “We worked there for eight years before expanding to our Flint office in 2006.”

Since then, Max Well Therapy continued to grow opening an office in Grand Blanc in 2007 and then expanding services to pediatric physical therapy after that.

“We treat patients throughout their lifespan,” says Maxwell. “We continually identify patients who are underserved in our community and find ways to provide services for those who cannot access them.”

Max Well Therapy offers a wide variety of therapies including physical, speech, occupational and massage. The practice also developed a wellness center where patients who have completed their therapy can continue to maintain their health and wellness.

After almost 23 years in business, Max Well Therapy, LLC continues to grow and provide quality services to the community of Genesee County.

What is one of your proudest moments?

We had an 18-month-old child who had multiple medical challenges. We didn’t know if he would ever be able to walk. After working with him for some time we provided him with what is called a dandy walker and we were able to watch him walk for the first time with his mother there. Being able to be there for a parent whose child is struggling and to see them achieve is a great feeling.

Why did you decide to open in Flint & Genesee?

To be honest, because I lived here. I ended up in Flint by the flip of a coin. I’m from Minnesota and after college there were many places I could work with as a physical therapist. I applied for a job with Flint Township and they offered me a position. After moving here, I met my husband and we’ve been here since.

How would you describe the area to an outsider?

Flint has a lot of hard-working people. They have been through a lot of challenges, but they continue to work hard.

What is your business philosophy?

To listen and respond to people. To not only support my patients but my staff members. I work to help my patients get better and also work with my staff so they can be the best they can be.

Outside of business, what do you like to do?

I like to travel and explore. I love to go hiking, we’ve been on many trips including to Mt. Zion and the Grand Canyon. My husband and I also ride Harley Davidson motorcycles. We’ll bring them on our trips and ride through national parks.

What are your plans for the future?

We are currently growing out of both locations and are looking to possibly open a third.

Where do you like to eat out and spend time in Flint & Genesee?

My favorite restaurant is Grill of India. As for how I spend my time, I enjoy the community events in Flint such as Back to the Bricks, Bikes on the Bricks and the Crim.

What advice would you offer to other business owners or future entrepreneurs?

Listen to people and read books on business. Learn how to set up and organize your business. Put your plan and vision together and share it with others and things will start to happen. If you can, get a mentor who can coach you along the way and give constructive advice to help your business grow.
