YouthQuest Highlights: May 2018

Helping Hands

At Dye Elementary, students often ask to be a helper to a learning guide. Older students have made it a priority to earn the right to help clean the cafeteria when needed or assist with younger classes on field trips. Students have learned the importance of taking ownership and use that to find different ways to help.

Allez Cuisine!

Students teamed up at Southwestern Classical Academy to compete in their version of Iron Chef. The two groups were given a secret ingredient and were challenged to find a recipe using that ingredient. One week the ingredient was cheese, another week it was avocado. Students then gathered their ingredients and prepared their dishes. Dishes were judged at the end of the competition to see which team was the YouthQuest Iron Chef.

Fruits of Labor

Students from multiple sites participated in YQ Inc Business Fair at the Flint Farmers’ Market. They created their own products, set up production and sold the products during the fair. The event was well attended and the young entrepreneurs earned a collective total of $5,023. Learning profit sharing, students divided their earnings and used the money how they chose. Some student reinvested into their business while other had fun with their share and threw a pizza party.

Physics in Action

Roller-skating, rollercoasters, trampolines – sounds like fun! Students at Durant-Tuuri-Mott Elementary used each of these things to learn about physics. Students participated in physics-related activities before each of their field trips including Rollerhaven, Kokomo’s Family Fun Center, Michigan’s Adventure, Skyzone and Cedar Point.

YouthQuest is made possible through the generous support of the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation and 21st Century Community Learning Centers.
