YouthQuest Highlights: January 2017

ON THE CATWALK

Students in Fashion Club at International Academy of Flint organized a fashion show for their teachers, parents and classmates. The students took old pieces of clothing and designed them into new pieces, which they modeled in the fashion show. They learned how to use their resources and create a show on a budget. The students oversaw planning the whole event including the fashion, music, scenes, lighting, set up, and order of the show. In doing this, they learned the different roles and responsibilities involved in putting on a fashion event.

DR. SEUSS OR DR. DRE

In poetry club at Freeman Elementary, students were tasked with taking rhymes from Dr. Seuss poems and turning them into raps. Then, after listening to the music, they wrote about how the music they were listening to made them feel. The students learned how to express their emotions in a creative way.

HOP ON THE MAGIC SCHOOL BUS

At Eisenhower Elementary, students in the Magic School Bus geography club use their imagination to travel to different cities around the United States. During their travels, they learn facts such as capitals, climate, and where different regions are in relation to Flint. Students then test their knowledge in a Jeopardy-style game show, where they compete to see who can remember the most about what they learned.

SLIME TIME

Fourth and fifth grade students at Doyle Ryder Elementary started their own Slime Factory Store. They make a variety of slime including foam, glitter and regular. Every Thursday, students can purchase the slime from their peers using Doyle Ryder Dragon Bucks – fake money that students are given to teach them responsibility.
