Scholarship Guide 2021

For students who are attending college in the fall of 2021, now is the time to check out the scholarships that are available. Whether they are entering their first year or going back to school, there are a number of scholarships available in the area to help pay for tuition, room and board, and other expenses such as books.

“It’s always a good idea to get a head start on applying for scholarships,” says Dr. Kimberly Leverette, executive director of Education & Training at the Flint & Genesee Chamber of Commerce. “That way, you have enough time to complete all of the materials required to apply.”

Here are some scholarship opportunities for students in Flint & Genesee.

Lake Michigan Credit Union’s annual 2020-21 Hutt Scholarship Essay Contest

This scholarship is open to high school seniors in Michigan who plan on entering a trade school, college or university in the next academic year (2021-2022). Students must answer the question “A Day in the Life. Describe one day in your life from the past year,” in an original essay that is 750 – 1,500 words. The deadline to apply is January 31, 2021. Community Foundation of Greater Flint Scholarship Program

There are several scholarships offered to students through the Community Foundation of Greater Flint Scholarship program. The majority of the scholarships are offered under one application. Scholarships include the Marie Manley Scholarship, open to female students in Genesee County that participated in the Flint Olympian or CANUSA Games, and the Leslie G. Ames Fund, open to Genesee County students with a 3.0 GPA or above. For more information and to apply, visit cfgf.org.

Flint Kiwanis Scholarship

This scholarship is awarded to a senior who demonstrates financial need and plans on attending a four-year college or university in the state of Michigan. Genesee County students can ask their high school counselors for more details.

Wilsterman Foundation Scholarship

This scholarship is open to Genesee County seniors with great potential who may have struggled in high school due to extenuating circumstances. The deadline to apply for the next school year is March 15, 2021. To learn more, visit wilsterman.org/apply.

The Flint Promise

Flint Promise is a scholarship program for graduates of high schools located in the city of Flint that live in the city of Flint. By covering the cost of tuition after federal grants and other scholarships have been applied, Flint Promise allows eligible students to attend participating colleges for little to no cost.
