YouthQuest will be out of session during the holidays – however, there are plenty of activities to keep students busy during the break.
“It is always a good idea to continue learning through holiday breaks,” says Nefertari Jones, Program Director for YouthQuest. “If parents keep students engaged, they have an easier time coming back after the new year.”
To help students stay engaged, parents might check out:
- Flint Institute of Arts(1120 E. Kearsley St., Flint) which provides free admission to residents of Genesee County.
- The Flint Public Libraryand Genesee District Library both have many free family activities through December.
- The University of Michigan-Flint University Pavilion Ice Rink(303 Saginaw St., Flint) has open skate on Wednesdays from 6 p.m. – 9 p.m., Fridays from 5 p.m. – 8 p.m., and Saturdays and Sundays from 12 p.m. – 4 p.m.
- The Sloan Museum at Courtland Center (4190 E. Court St., Flint) is the temporary location while the Sloan Museum of Discovery renovations are underway. Current exhibits include Wild Kratts®: Creature Power®! And Rock U. The museum is open Monday – Friday, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday 12 – 5 p.m.
- Flint Children’s Museum (1602 University Ave, Flint) is a great place for students to experience hands-on learning. The museum is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. and Sunday 12 – 4 p.m.
Additionally, for families in need, there are several local resources and programs available during the holiday season. Some of these include:
- Carriage Town Ministries, 605 Garland St., Flint
- Emergency food, clothing, shelter, health screening and more
- Food Bank of Eastern Michigan, 2312 Lapeer Road, Flint
- Provides assistance with food
- Greater Flint Outreach Center, 1114 University Ave, Flint
- Provides food and clothing
- Little Lamb’s Closet, 2254 S Dye Rd, Flint
- Provides winter clothing
- South Flint Soup Kitchen, Lincoln Park United Methodist Church, 3410 Fenton Road, Flint
- Provides lunch
- Toys for Tots – Flint, 4425 South Saginaw Street, Flint
- Provides holiday toys for children
