Furthering Entrepreneurial Dreams: GRCC Now Accepting Applications for Katharine Roat Stevens Scholarships

(Flint, Michigan – January 19, 2011) Women with entrepreneurial aspirations and looking to further their education are encouraged to apply for the Katharine Roat Stevens Scholarship Fund award and/or the Katharine Roat Stevens Education and Training Fund award. The two scholarships are given annually and managed by the Genesee Chamber Foundation.

The Scholarship Fund is awarded in an amount of up to $1,000 to qualified female high school seniors graduating from Genesee County schools. The application deadline is March 1, 2011.

The Education and Training Fund supports education and training opportunities for low income women with entrepreneurial aspirations living in Genesee County. The Education and Training Fund award in the amount of up to $1,000 will be earmarked for college, vocational or recognized business-related training. Applications for this scholarship can be submitted throughout the year for funding consideration.

“It’s important to help students realize their dreams of becoming an entrepreneur,” said Rhetta Hunyady, Group Vice President, Operations and Employer Education & Training Connection for the Flint & Genesee Chamber of Commerce.  “We hope women who have ambitions to start and manage their own businesses one day will apply for one of our scholarships.”

The scholarships were created in honor of Ms. Katharine Roat Stevens, a successful local business owner and entrepreneur who desired to further the role of women entrepreneurs in Genesee County. The funds were made available in Ms. Stevens’ memory at the Community Foundation of Greater Flint by the Flint Chamber Foundation (now the Genesee Chamber Foundation) in 1993. The first scholarship was presented in 2008.
