(FLINT, Mich., March 1, 2018) Flint students can now apply for the Flint Promise scholarship, starting March 1.
Flint Promise is available to Flint residents who will graduate from a high school or GED program located in Flint in 2018 or later.
The scholarship will cover up to 100 percent of a student’s tuition and book fees after federal grants and other scholarships are applied. Additionally, each Flint Promise student will receive academic and personal support throughout his or her college career.
The scholarship may be used at Mott Community College for up to three academic years as a student pursues a certificate or an associate degree. From there, students who earn an associate degree or transfer certificate from Mott Community College may extend the scholarship for up to three academic years at the University of Michigan-Flint to pursue a bachelor’s degree.
“Flint Promise is a commitment to the city’s youth and an investment in their future,” said Rhetta Hunyady, vice president of education and training at the Flint & Genesee Chamber of Commerce, which administers and operates the scholarship program. “We’re excited to help students realize their goals of attending college and look forward to supporting them in their academic journeys.”
To meet the scholarship’s eligibility requirements, applicants must:
- Graduate from a high school located within the City of Flint, or receive a GED in the City of Flint, in or after 2018
- Reside within the City of Flint at the time of graduation
- Graduate with a 1.8 GPA or higher
- Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FASFA)
- Apply to a participating college or university
- Be age 24 or younger
After completing the online application, available at theflintpromise.org, students will be contacted by a Flint Promise Success Coach to confirm their eligibility and ensure they’re on track to begin college in the fall.
The application deadline for the fall semester is July 16, 2018.
Flint Promise was established through $2 million in combined gifts from the Consumers Energy Foundation and Tom Gores, Founder of FlintNOW.
Earlier this year, the City of Flint issued a proclamation designating March 1, 2018 Flint Promise Day – a day designed to increase public awareness about the scholarship program and its benefits.
