In Your Corner: December brings the holidays and a pathway to major redevelopment

Once again, the holiday season is upon us, and with it brings the close of another energizing and productive year.

This year has been busy and one that has resulted in continued economic progress. I look forward to sharing the details of our 2013 accomplishments at our Annual Meeting in 2014.

December 2013 will be memorable for more than the holidays. This month we will make history with the demolition of the Genesee Towers; a necessary step to make way for an exciting future in downtown Flint.

On the Sunday before Christmas at 10:00 a.m. in the morning, the Flint skyline will change over the course of about 6 seconds. And very soon afterward we will look back on this historic occasion and recognize it as one of the key events that helped to move our region forward, erase blight and encourage new business growth.

The redevelopment plans for this site are part of a $30 million redevelopment plan that includes an Exploration Park, the new Flint Farmers Market, MSU’s public health program, lofts and retail. It is truly an exciting time!

As we get closer to the date of the implosion, we will provide final details regarding a public viewing area, live television coverage, and the safety and blast plans.

In the meantime, I wish you peace and joy during the holidays! I hope you will stay active with the Chamber in 2014 as we continue our work on the economic recovery of Flint & Genesee.

All the Best!

Tim
