Moving Flint Forward Initiative

The Flint water emergency is a public health and economic crisis. While many of the recovery efforts focused on Flint will help address health and infrastructure problems in the city, the Flint & Genesee Chamber of Commerce has focused its resources to respond to unmet needs in the business community, crumbling neighborhoods that lack accessibility to products and services, and a challenge to attract visitors to Flint & Genesee. To accomplish this, the Flint & Genesee Chamber of Commerce lauched the Moving Flint Forward Initiative with strategic partner FlintNOW.

The City of Flint has over 7,000 businesses, which have been overlooked in many of the recovery efforts, including plans for pipe replacement. Additionally, efforts to attract visitors have been damaged by the negative publicity, affecting many of the community’s attractions, hotels, and events slowing down the economic impact of tourism. These challenges are not currently addressed by private and public resources.

In order to create long-term, sustainable impact in these areas, the Genesee Chamber Foundation, a support organization to the Flint & Genesee Chamber of Commerce, established the Moving Flint Forward Fund at the Community Foundation of Greater Flint. The fund, a centerpiece of the Moving Flint Forward Initiative, was created to provide financial support for small businesses, minority-owned businesses, North Flint redevelopment and activities that encourage tourism. The Moving Flint Forward Fund will help bridge the gaps that exist between the various government sources of funds as well as address the business recovery needs that are outside the realm of health and human services.
