(FLINT, Mich., Sept. 22, 2014) – The Flint & Genesee Chamber of Commerce YouthQuest program has been awarded a $4,000 grant to support youth literacy.
The grant from the Dollar General Literacy Foundation will go toward the purchase of the Discussions4Learning curriculum, which will help improve reading and vocabulary skills for students at YouthQuest, a comprehensive, free afterschool program that serves more than 2,000 K-12 students in 18 area schools.
“Literacy skills are the vital foundation of a student’s overall education,” said Rhetta Hunyady, Vice President, Education and Training, Flint & Genesee Chamber. “This grant will help purchase curriculum tools to help ensure that we give our YouthQuest students the support they need in developing those crucial skills.”
YouthQuest reinforces learning that takes place during the school day by offering high-quality activities and services that encourage the exploration of new interests in the areas of STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) and the arts, and promotes academic achievement, physical fitness, youth leadership and volunteerism.
Awarded at the beginning of the academic year, youth literacy grants from the Dollar General Literacy Foundation help provide teachers, schools and organizations with the funding and resources they need to properly begin the school year. This fall, the Dollar General Literacy Foundation awarded nearly $4 million to approximately 825 schools, nonprofits and literacy organizations to enhance and support youth literacy and education across the United States.
