TeenQuest is a free afterschool pre-employment and leadership training program sponsored by the Flint & Genesee Chamber of Commerce

Teen Quest is designed to teach Genesee County teens important skills needed to help you stand out in the crowd to employers.  Are you a teen 14-19 years old, currently in grades 9-12 and want to get and keep a job? If so, this program is for you!

Teens that successfully complete TeenQuest are eligible to participate in the Summer Youth Initiative Job Fair. Plus, other employment or intern opportunities may be available through area employers throughout the school year to teens who complete the program.

This five-week after school program is conducted as a sheltered workshop and designed to give students a basic understanding of skills that are required within the workforce. Leadership, as it relates to TeenQuest, is defined as a set of skills and the application and use of these skills at school, home and work.

Skills Learned

Training covers core employment competencies that every employer looks for in an employee. Students must demonstrate the following skills:

  1. Interview
  2. Business etiquette
  3. Application/resumé preparation
  4. Communication
  5. Workplace ethics
  6. Character development
  7. Positive mental attitude
  8. Managing change
  9. Taking initiative
  10. Conflict resolution
  11. Teamwork
  12. Setting goals
  13. Financial Literacy


Volunteerism is a significant part of the TeenQuest experience. Not only does it connect you with community members who need assistance, but it shows how the effort to lend a hand, gives back to the volunteer on numerous levels. Volunteering at the end of the TeenQuest program is a prerequisite for graduation.

Graduation Requirements

  • Students must dress appropriately for a job interview.
  • Students must demonstrate their job interview skills in a mock interview.
  • Students must demonstrate proficiency in TeenQuest Foundation Skills.
  • Students must develop personal goals, action plans and timing for applying TeenQuest skills at home, school and work.
  • Students must complete evaluation forms.
  • Students must attend TeenQuest Graduation Ceremony.
