Chamber Helps Youth Explore America

YouthQuest Celebrates Year-End with Planes, Trains and Automobiles

(FLINT, MICH. – June 3) ‘From sea to shining sea’ takes on a whole new meaning as the Flint and Genesee Chamber of Commerce YouthQuest students explore America through the Planes, Trains and Automobile year-end event.  On Thursday, June 6 more than 1,200 YouthQuest students will participate in the end of year celebration at Bluebell Beach from 4:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Students from 15 YouthQuest school sites from throughout the region will present one of the United States through travel-themed activities.  Each site was tasked with representing a chosen state through food, creating a brochure, an art project and the state flag.

“Understanding the diversity and richness of America is an important learning opportunity for YouthQuest students,” said Tim Herman, Chamber CEO.  “Travel is a fun way to visit different areas of the country, while learning how local traditions work and the assets each state has to offer.”

Students will also participate in a variety of activities throughout the celebration.  Sack races, tug-of-war, kickball, relay races and crafts will take place during the event.

According to Rhetta Hunyady, Vice President of Education and Training for the Chamber Planes, Trains and Automobiles is designed to help students explore America.

“YouthQuest was created to provide an afterschool enrichment opportunity for students in the region,” said Hunyady.  “Simulating travel across America provides a fun, interactive way for YouthQuest students to gain a greater understanding of different parts of the country.  This event provides a creative way to see each state through the eyes of YouthQuest students.”

YouthQuest is a free afterschool program that reaches more than 2,000 K-8 students at 15 school-based sites in Flint and Genesee County managed by the Chamber.  For more information about YouthQuest contact Rhetta Hunyady at (810) 600-1412 or visit www.yquest.org .
