Recently, the Flint & Genesee Chamber announced the endorsement of Dayne Walling for reelection as Mayor of Flint. Given that the Flint water supply is top of mind for most people, I know it is difficult to set the issue aside, it’s the City’s top priority. But I ask that you step away for just a moment; because endorsing a candidate for mayor goes far beyond one issue – although it is a significant one.
Our endorsement is the result of a process led by our Public Policy Committee (PPC), which included each candidate completing a questionnaire and participating in a panel interview.
The PPC’s review process revealed that Flint voters will have a choice of two very smart, capable and personable candidates from which to select their next mayor. In addition, we believe the quality of these candidates is an encouraging development for the future of civic leadership in Flint.
At the same time, only one candidate can be elected mayor. After careful deliberation, we feel that Mayor Walling is the best candidate to lead the City of Flint over the next four years for the following reasons:
- A thorough understanding of how government operates and the funding mechanisms
- Established working relationships with government officials at the county, state and federal levels as well as the Receivership Transition Advisory Board and City Administrator
- Concrete strategies for continuing the city’s forward progress
- A strong focus on the city’s new comprehensive Master Plan
We are striving to be the very best at representing our members’ interests with government. That calls for investment in time and effort with a goal to take our current public policy program to a higher level; and we are doing just that.
We have a candidate endorsement process, we weigh in on relevant issues and get involved at the grassroots level. This takes place through our Operating Board, our Public Policy Committee and our staff, which helps to strengthen our business and tourism climate in Flint and Genesee County; and advance Chamber priorities for the betterment of the community.
