Flint & Genesee Chamber Endorses Seven Candidates for County Commission

(FLINT, Mich. – July 28, 2016) Today, the Flint & Genesee Chamber of Commerce Public Policy Committee (PPC) announced the endorsement of seven candidates in the August 2 primary election for the Genesee County Board of Commissioners.

The PPC interviewed nine candidates who returned the committee’s questionnaire about the Board of Commissioners election. Following are the candidates selected for endorsement.

  • 1st District:  The incumbent is unopposed; did not participate in the endorsement process
  • 2nd District:  Brenda Clack (D), incumbent
  • 3rd District:  Jamie Curtis (D), incumbent
  • 4th District:  James Franklin III (D)
  • 5th District:  Mark Young (D), incumbent
  • 6th District:  Tony Brown (R), incumbent
  • 7th District:  Candidates did not participate in the process
  • 8th District:  Candidates did not participate in the process
  • 9th District:  Brian Norman (D) and David Martin (R)

“The candidates that we’ve endorsed for the Genesee County Board of Commissioners bring a depth of knowledge on the issues, and are committed to working with the business community to advance our region’s growth prospects,” said Wen Hemingway, President of Baker College of Flint and PPC Co-Chair. “This is a solid group of candidates and we encourage support for them.”

All candidates were invited to complete a questionnaire and to participate in an interview process. The PPC then evaluated the candidates based on their overall responses. Candidates who chose not to participate in the process were not evaluated.

“I really appreciate the effort put forth by the Chamber’s Public Policy Committee to evaluate the candidates and offer endorsements,” said Tim Herman, CEO of the Flint & Genesee Chamber. “This is a valuable public service to help educate and guide our members and voters in selecting our representatives at the county level.”
